Day one excitement

Based on your feedback on reasons to be in BioEnriched and comments I made earlier I want you all to get the most for your experience.  Use the blog as a forum to discuss the class.

  1. How is your plant research going?
  2. What sorts of surprises have you learned about your plant?
  3. How do you feel about your first day of class approaching next week?
  4. What are your fears/concerns about the class/labs?
  5. Do you know who else is studying your plant sample?  Have you contacted each other?

Replies are not required for the class, I am trying to meet your requests to prepare you for AP science, college science and careers in science.  Note, the internet was developed by physicist to share data and scientific research amongst fellow scientists around the world.

  4. 1. It's going well, but it's harder to find info on scietific uses than traditional/cultural uses.
    2. It's used in a LOT of cooking...
    3. I'm nervous and a little stressed because there is a bit of work to do, but I'm close to being done. I'm also excited to start the lab.
    4. I guess a fear is not doing the labs correctly and having too much work.
    5. I think I do, but we have yet to contact each other.

  5. Jeanette, look at lemongrass compounds and the essential oils associated with your plant.

  6. 1)My research is going pretty well, but the main information I was able to find was only about it's uses in the kitchen and medical uses.
2)I haven't really learned anything surprising.
3)I'm pretty nervous about class because it's our first class.
4)I'm really worried about being able to get all the work done, and doing the labs correctly.
5)I don't know who I'm going to work with yet. I haven't seen anyone else with lemon peel as their choice.

  8. 1) my research is going well, i know a few facts, and how it looks like.
2)i was surprised that if you touch Stinging nettle, then it might feel like a bee stung you, or maybe even more painful.
3)i think the first day of class will be a "peace of cake"- i quote the first dude who said that.
4)I'm fearful that i might touch my sample, and be in a world of hurt for a few days.( i guess its all part of the fun), also i hope i will have people I'm comfortable with in my group.(not fun at all)
5)I have no Idea who else might have Stinging nettle, and the only thing i care about is that i have at least a friend or more in my group.

  9. -I have completed my plant research and am very interested in what information I have gathered.
-I learned that my plant is used not only for beauty purposes but also has medical benefits
-I am nervous and excited about the first day because it is quickly approaching.
-I am worried about not understanding some of the topics we go over and many negative things but it is probably because I am nervous.
-yes I know my partner and have contacted her about our plant sample and what information we have both collected.
    I WISH EVERYONE LUCK =D

  10. 1. I’m finished with my plant research; it was pretty straightforward.
    2. I've learned that it is very flammable, & could be a good source of firewood. Its oils can also be used as remedies for a large variety of sicknesses/health conditions.
    3. I’m a little scared that I’m going to make a mistake, probably because I might be nervous. I also fear a possibly big workload.
    4. Yes, I know who my partner is and I have contacted her.

  11. Oops, I forgot one.
    3. I'm pretty excited, yet anxious. I know the class will be interesting, but the workload might be stressful.

  12. Roann, look at lemon peel's active compounds and essential oils.

Shahrier, stinging nettle stings only last a few minutes. I like them and use the plant for my seasonal allergies and it's great nutritional value. tastes like spinach, no stings when cooked.

  13. 1) Research has been a pretty bumpy ride. I've found out some uses for nasturtium, but not a whole lot of scientific uses. I found a site that helped me clear up its scientific name which was good.
    2) I've found out that Nasturtiums are edible, and very colorful.
3)I feel pretty excited to finally start!
    4) No fears really, I plan to come in calm.
    5) I have not found out who my partner is D:

  14. Chris et al., compounds and essential oils related to your plant should help with some science or at least medicinal uses. For nasturtium see Chinese medicine.

  15. 1. I've just started the plant research, just learned the scientific name and a few facts. It was a little difficult to figure out what plant it was, since when I typed in "california sage" there were a lot of sage plants in California... until I saw the example picture and realized it was sagebrush.
    2. I found out that burning the sagebrush is used to remove skunk odor. I also realized that I have seen this plant a lot after seeing pictures.
    3. Of course I'm nervous about the class, but from reading the handouts and doing the vocab research it seems like it will be a fun and cool class that is more complicated than the usual biology labs, although the DNA lab was pretty complicated.
    4. My fears are a big workload, and possibly making a mistake in the lab as I got very faint results in the DNA lab.
    5. I know who my partner is, but I have not contacted her.

    1. My research is doing pretty good even though I just recently started. I've found a lot of interesting facts that I have never known till now. There are lots of websites on recipes consisting of thyme than research.
    2. I've never knew about the history of thyme and I was pretty surprised when people used to use it as a medicinal herb to help with throat problems.
    3. I'm a little worried that I might make mistakes in the lab and turning in the wrong homework, but I am pretty excited too.
    4. My major concern is whether I can finish all the work especially the last deadline. I'm also worried that I might have done something wrong in the homework that I might be kicked out of the class.
    5. I'm not totally sure who my partner is, but I'll be excited to know who it is XD.

    1. Research is okay, but I keep on getting results for some weird oregano oil tablets, or some other type of medication.
    2. Oregano is used to relieve toothaches, pretty cool. Never actually eaten oregano, but it is used in a lot of European cuisine.
    3. Nervous, about labs, too much work, and school work to balance with enriched work.
    4. I might do something worng in the lab and might be too stressed to complete the lab write-ups.
    5. No clue who my partner is... hope I don't have to do this entire lab myself.

1)The study on garlic have been going OK.

2)The garlic are herbal plants for the good of our body like our heart, digestion, eyesight, etc...

3)I am feeling scared because I have never been in Bio Enriched before.

    4) I am afraid that Bio Enriched work will be too much for me to handle.

5)I have no clue. I haven't emailed anyone who is doing the Garlic plant sample

  20. Hello!
1)My research is flowing pretty smoothly
2)I was surprised as I learned that my plant sample is not only used as an antiseptic but as a substitute for additional chemicals in household cleaning agents, etc.
3)I feel a bit nervous yet pretty excited for the first Day of BE.
4)My concerns would be balancing all my school work with my activities outside of school. I'm also a bit nervous about making careless errors that may eventually kick me out of the class D:
5)I do know who is also researching the same plant sample, but I haven't contacted them yet...

  21. Salutations,
1)my research is easy, and is helped because my dad works in a pharmaceutical company
2)I was amused to learn that not only is lemongrass used for muscle pain, but for fragrance in soaps and natural
3)I feel a bit apprehensive at the workload,as I am not good at time management, but am excited at the prospect of learning more about my plant lemon grass, as I cook with it often :D
4)I have already mentioned some of my concerns above, but one that I am particularly stressed with is my logic is my final write up for the labs, for at the end, you can always add a 'so what?' to it
5)I have no idea who is associated with me for this lab, but I do hope I will get along with them
